Robert H. Murphy

Robert Murphy recently retired as the Managing Director of the law firm he co-founded over 30 years ago, Murphy, Rogers, Sloss, Gambel & Tompkins. He has over 45 years of litigation experience primarily as an admiralty and maritime lawyer, but also handling commercial litigation, gaming industry issues, insurance coverage disputes, and personal injury claims. Although he represented mostly defense clients, his evaluations recognized the value of plaintiffs’ damage claims, and he and his firm also represented plaintiffs in class actions and other cases.

Mr. Murphy graduated from the University of Dayton in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree before attending Loyola University New Orleans School of Law. He was a member of Loyola Law Review and the Managing Editor of the Law Review for the 1976-1977 term. After graduation from Loyola in 1977, he joined Chaffe, McCall, Phillips, Toler & Sarpy in the Admiralty Section and became a partner in five years. He co-founded Murphy, Rogers, Sloss, Gambel & Tompkins in 1992. The firm initially was primarily focused on maritime litigation matters involving seamen, longshoremen and passenger injury and death claims, collisions, allisions, cargo claims, and contract disputes, but soon branched out to handling commercial litigation, insurance coverage disputes, gaming industry issues and personal injury claims. He is a very experienced litigator, having tried scores of lawsuits to juries and judges in the federal and state courts of Louisiana during his 45 years of practice.

In 2013, the New Orleans Bar Association presented Mr. Murphy with its Distinguished Maritime Lawyer Award. He has been recognized by the Martindale-Hubbell as an AV Preeminent Peer Rated Attorney for many years.

In 2013, he attended Harvard Law School’s Negotiation Institute and successfully completed the Mediating Disputes Program, where he learned advanced techniques for alternative dispute resolution. He has represented clients in mediations in hundreds of personal injury and property damage disputes. He also has acted as a maritime arbitrator in two shipbuilding contract disputes.

Mr. Murphy was in born in Chicago and raised in Oak Park, Illinois. He and his wife, Maggie, have three adult children and seven grandchildren. He resides in Metairie and has been active in the Oakridge Park Improvement Association, serving on the Board and as President. Over the years, he has coached numerous youth baseball and basketball teams at Carrollton Boosters and continues to this day to coach his grandsons’ teams. Since 2000, he has enjoyed being the Game Announcer for the Jesuit Blue Jays Basketball team.
